Good news! The Xinsheng South Canal Image Re-creation and Pedestrian Landscape Beautification Project by the New Construction Office of Taipei City has won the Outstanding Award in the “Parks and Green Spaces - Public Open Space” category of the 2021 Taiwan Landscape Awards

The New Construction Office of the Public Works Department of Taipei City has been acknowledged for its work once again by winning the Outstanding Award in the Parks and Green Spaces - Public Open Space category of the “2021 9th Taiwan Landscape Awards” with the “Xinsheng South Road Section 3 - Canal Image Re-creation and Pedestrian Landscape Beautification Project.” The Taiwan Institute of Landscape Architects held the award ceremony at the Shuxin Hall of the Nishi Hongan-ji on March 5, 2022.

Chief Hsiao Chih-Lung of the Public Works Section of the New Construction Office says the “Xinsheng South Road Section 3 - Canal Image Re-creation and Pedestrian Landscape Beautification Project” has been completed after 11 months of construction, from July 2020 to June 2021, encompassing the area from the main entrance (the intersection of Section 4, Roosevelt Rd. and Section 3, Xinsheng S Rd.) of National Taiwan University to Section 1, Xinhai Rd. The land provided by National Taiwan University, which was once a parking lot for scooters and bikes on the campus, is now redesigned as an open space for pedestrians. Inside the base, a water channel with a water retention feature is built, with an agricultural waterway as its imagery. The sidewalks beside the water channel are built with permeable paving surfaces, surrounded by a large number of shrubs and ground cover plants, creating people-oriented, resilient, and sustainable green pathways and an environment close to the water, and making Taipei a livable city where people and nature can coexist in harmony.

Hsiao also encourages citizens to take the way along the canal at Xinsheng South Road near the shopping areas when visiting Gongguan commercial district. They can let themselves settle in the bustling and lively streets of the southern areas of Taipei City, enjoy the tranquility and comfort while wandering beside the green water channel, and experience a different side of Taipei.
