Taipei City’s common ducts continue to improve with intelligent technology, the Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering conducts a visit to exchange experiences

In consideration of the continuous promotion of common duct construction and the introduction of intelligent management systems in Taipei City, on March 29, 2021, the chairman Yang Yi-tung of the Information Committee of the Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering led 20 members of the institution to conduct a visit for the common ducts in Taipei City. Tseng, Chun-chieh, Chief of the Civil Engineering Division of the Public Works Department, and Li, Hui-yu, Deputy Director of the New Construction Office of the Public Works Department, introduced and shared their experiences on common ducts. The Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering exchanged experiences with Taipei City on topics related to the construction, operation, maintenance, and intelligent management of common ducts. They conducted an onsite visit for the main pipes of the common ducts of MRT Songshan line, hoping to use Taipei City’s experience in promoting common duct construction management for reference.
 
Hung, Wei-tsung, Chief of the Utilities Conduit Planning Section of the New Construction Office, said that the total length of the common ducts in Taipei City is 98 kilometers, and that the Section has more than 20 years of experience in the construction and operation of common ducts. In addition, at the end of December 2020, BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology was introduced into the common duct management and maintenance operating system, combined with GIS (Geographic Information System) to establish a BIM-GIS web page information query system. In the future, the monitoring system and the BIM management system will be interfaced to give full play to information integration benefits. Furthermore, to continue promoting intelligent management, the feasibility and benefits of building a network within the ducts will be evaluated.
 
In this regard, Chairman Yang of the Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering gave an affirmation on the spot, saying that the common duct works are complicated, and the maintenance and management involve operational hazard prevention in confined spaces, civil engineering and electromechanical specialties. Therefore, it should be evaluated from the perspective of management and maintenance systems, making good use of technology to replace inspection manpower, establishing the common duct wireless transmission, and importing maintenance and inspection records into the database of the system in real-time to facilitate subsequent integration for big data analysis. In the end, Yang gave thanks to the New Construction Office for providing a valuable experience.
